WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?
Blood pressure is the tension the blood exerts against the walls of the blood vessels. A certain degree of pressure is needed to help your blood carry oxygen throughout your body. Blood pressure fluctuates (goes up or down) normally, depending on the body's need for oxygen. For example, it goes down during sleep and up during exercise.
WHAT CAUSES HYPERTENSION?
The exact cause of hypertension is not known. However, several factors can contribute to high blood pressure, such as:
- Family history
- Stress
- Inactive lifestyle
- Overweight/obesity
- Lack of exercise
- Excessive alcohol intake
- A high-salt and/or high-fat diet
- Smoking
WHAT CAN I DO?
If you have Hypertension making healthy lifestyle choices and taking your anti-hypertension medication regularly, you'll be doing what you can to help lower your high blood pressure. Healthy lifestyle choices include:
- Cutting down on high-salt and high-fat foods
- Eating fresh food instead of prepared food (e.g., canned or boxed goods
- Reducing the amount of table salt you use
- Exercising or staying as active as you can
- Quitting smoking
- Drinking alcohol only moderately
- Taking your medication exactly as prescribed
